The Dublin and Wicklow 1313 lodge would like to bring to your attention the following.
It has been confirmed that Christ Church Cathedral and 6 other Church of Ireland churches will be closed in Dublin on Easter Day at the insistence of the Garda, apparently without consultation. You may not know that the article giving the Roman Catholic church a special position in this state was removed 43 years ago.
However, this act of closing the Church of Ireland churches and we must presume other reformed churches might be seen as being one of discrimination, bearing in mind the Roman Catholic churches in inner city Dublin will remain open for worship. It was reported that this was disused with the Roman Catholic Archbishop who opposed the closing of his churches.
It comes of no surprise to us that this same courtesy was not extended to the Anglican Archbishop, who seems to be more interested in attending this commemoration than standing up for his flock who are in many cases unable to attend Sunday worship.
We might also ask why the date chosen is March 27th, Easter Day, rather than 24th April, the date the Rising started. One would have though the 24th April is the correct date .
